The Barcelona Cathedral (La Seu) is a beautiful example of Catalan Gothic architecture, started in 1298. The complicated facade was added much later, in the 19th century. The Barcelona Cathedral is dedicated to Santa Eulalia who was killed by the Romans for her Catholic faith. The large bell towers combine medieval and Renaissance styles and it ranks among the most impressive Cathedrals in Spain. There are 29 lavishly decorated side chapels and a magnificent 14th century cloister. The latter is home to a number of geese who have been kept here for over 500 years. There is also the museum of the Cathedral which houses an assortment of 15th century religious paintings.

Every Sunday at noon, local people gather in front of the Cathedral to dance the famous Sardana, the Catalan national dance. You will be made welcome to join in. The steps to the Cathedral are also popular with street beggars and entertainers.
